Gold ETF Investment Freeze: Why Mutual Funds Have Halted Fresh Inflows

The restrictions aim to moderate fresh investment flows into precious metals amid record inflows, rising import concerns and pressure on the rupee.
Why Mutual Funds Have Paused Fresh Gold and Silver FoF Investments
The restrictions are not a blanket industry-wide decision. Individual asset management companies have taken their own decisions on fresh lump-sum investments, systematic investment plans (SIPs) and switch-ins to these schemes. Existing investments and certain ongoing transactions may continue under the applicable rules.
The move comes as investors increasingly use Gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and Funds of Funds (FoFs) to gain exposure to precious metals.
Gold ETF inflows rose from Rs. 9,225 crore in 2024 to Rs. 42,961 crore in 2025. Between January and September 2026, these funds attracted a further Rs. 45,926 crore in net inflows.
Why Have Mutual Funds Restricted Fresh Investments?
India imports around 85–90% of the gold it consumes, making gold purchases an important factor in the country's import bill and foreign exchange outflows.
The government has also raised import duties on gold and silver from 6% to 15%. The restrictions come ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali, when demand for precious metals typically rises.
Investment Restrictions and Their Impact
- Fresh investments paused: Participating fund houses have restricted fresh lump-sum investments, additional purchases, switch-ins and new SIP and STP registrations in specified Gold and Silver ETF FoF schemes from October 16, 2026.
- Existing SIPs continue: Instalments under SIPs and STPs registered before the effective date will continue to be processed under the respective scheme rules.
- Redemptions remain open: Investors can continue redeeming their units, making switch-outs and using existing systematic withdrawal plans, subject to scheme terms.
- Restrictions vary by fund house: The decisions were communicated through individual fund notices and are not a blanket industry-wide suspension. Reports indicate that several fund houses, including HDFC, ICICI Prudential, Tata and Invesco, have announced restrictions.
- Gold ETFs remain available: Restrictions on FoFs do not automatically prevent investors from buying Gold ETFs directly through the stock exchange, where trading remains available.
- Potential impact on gold demand: Since Gold ETFs are backed by physical gold, strong inflows can contribute to demand for the metal. Limiting fresh FoF investments may moderate one channel of investment demand, although the overall impact remains uncertain.
