The RBI announced in January 1993 guidelines for the establishment of banks in the private sector. HDFC a premier housing finance company engaged in the specialised field of housing finance was one of the first to receive an "in-principle" approval (dated August 20 1993) from the RBI for the establishment of a bank in the private sector. The Bank will provide a wide range of corporate financial and banking services in a manner reflecting HDFC culture. The Bank is incorporated under the name of "HDFC Bank Limited" with its registered office in Bombay. The Bank was issued the Certificate of Incorporation on August 30 1994 and the Certificate of Commencement of Business on October 10 1994. A banking license authorising the Bank to carry on banking business has been obtained from the RBI vide its letter no. 4422/16.01.104/95 dated January 5 1995.
