KCPL is a Joint Venture of Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (KSIDC) and two Japanese Companies viz. M/s. Nitta Gelatin Inc. (NGI) and Mitsubishi Corporation (MC). KSIDC has a 26% Equity stake in the paid-up capital while NGI & MC together have a 35.43% stake. Incorporated on 30th April 1975 it started commercial production in October 1979. The factory is situated at Kathikudam near Koratty in Trichur District of Kerala State (South India).The Company manufactures ossein from crushed bones using the technical know-how supplied by NGI. The initial installed capacity was 2240 tpa (tonnes per annum) which was increased to 3300 tpa in 1988 and to 5000 tpa in 1992. Ossein is an intermediate product used In the manufacture of gelatine. In the process of manufacturing ossein a by-product viz. Di-Calcium Phosphate (DCP) is also produced. The present installed capacity of DCP is 11000 tpa which was initially 4500 tpa in1979 and subsequently expanded to 6600 tpa In 1988. The entire production of ossein is being presently exported to NGI. The Company has also facilities to produce Compound Glue.The initial paid-up capital of the Company was Rs. 140 lacs at the time of its maiden Public Issue in January/February 1979. With a 1:2 Bonus Issue in 1992 the paid-up capital increased to Rs.210 lacs and a further Bonus Issue in the ratio of 1:1 in 1997 resulted in the paid-up capital increasing to its present level of Rs.420 lacs.
