The Company was incorporated in 1964 by Government of Indiaas a Public Sector Undertaking under the AdministrativeControl of Ministry of Defence Department of DefenceProduction and Supplies. The Company was incorporated as aPrivate Limited Company for the main purposes ofmanufacturing Heavy Earth Moving Equipments RailcoachesTanks Heavy Duty Trucks Trailers LocomotivesTracklaying Equipments Overhead Inspection CarsAggregates etc.On formation the Railcoach Division of HindustanAeronautics Limited was transferred to the Company withland building Plant and machinery manpower and otherinfrastructure facilities as a going concern for a totalconsideration of Rs. 6 Crores which was met by issue ofshares to the Government for consideration other than cash.In the very first year the Company commenced itsoperations. Simultaneously an on going Licence agreemententered into by Government with M/s. LetourneauWestinghouse Company USA for technical know-how formanufacture of a wide range of Earthmoving Equipments wasassigned to the Company for implementation of theagreement. It was then decided to locate the Earthmovingequipment plant at KGF for which the land was released bythe State Government. The Company commenced the Assemblyoperation of certain equipment at the Bangalore Complexduring 1964-65 and in a phased manner the manufacturingactivity was shifted to the KGF complex on establishingrequisite infrastructure facilities. During 1967-68 thecollaboration agreement entered into between the Governmentand M/s. Komatsu Limited Japan for technical know-how inthe manufacture of a wide range of Earthmoving equipmentssuch as bulldozers were assigned to BEML. The KGF Complexof the Company was formally commissioned during 1967-68.This plant concentrated on production of heavy earthmovingequipments like Dumpers Motor Graders Front End LoadersScrapers Bulldozers. To this range of equipments theCompany introduced into the manufacturing line HydraulicExcavators of different capacities and models.To attain self-dependence and ensure rapid absorption oftechnology a R&D complex was established at KGF. Thefacility for the R & D complex was further strengthened byUN Assistance through installation of sophisticated testingequipments. The R & D centre today is one of the best inSouth-east Asia. This has enhanced the capability of BEMLto test design and develop equipments. The R & D centreplays a vital role in the growth of the Company. As therange of the equipments manufactured increased it wasdecided to establish a new plant at Mysore for manufactureof a wide range Dump trucks. This plant was commissionedduring 1985. During 1987-88 the clearance of theGovernment was accorded for establishing a plant formanufacture of a wide range of Engines required for captiveuse on earthmoving equipments. This plant was establishedat Mysore Complex and commissioned during 1991.
