The project aligns with India's vision to increase nuclear power capacity to 9% by 2047.
Power Mech Projects announced on Wednesday that it has secured a significant order worth ₹563.23 crore from BHEL - Power Sector Southern Region. This marks the company's first major construction project in the critical nuclear power sector. The order encompasses Civil, Structural, and Architectural works for the Turbine Island package of Units 5 and 6 of the Kaiga Atomic Power Project, each with a capacity of 700 MWe PHWR, located in Uttar Kannada District, Karnataka.
According to the exchange filing, the project includes a wide range of segments covering civil, electrical, and structural works such as the Turbine Generator (TG) building, foundations for all equipment, a chemical lab, storage tanks, peripheral drains, sewage network, storm water drains, culverts, plinth protection, pipes and cable bay, condenser cooling water pipes, as well as plumbing and sanitary works.
Sajja Kishore Babu, Chairman and Managing Director of Power Mech Projects, commented on the strategic importance of this project: “This project is on the cusp of a significant transformation in India with a large scope for expansion. In securing this project, another door opens for PMPL to further its establishment in the nuclear power sector and contribute to the nation's growing sustainable energy needs.”
Currently, nuclear power contributes a modest 3% to India's national grid. However, the government has a vision to triple this capacity to 22,480 MW by 2031, aiming to make nuclear power account for nearly 9% of the country's electricity generation by 2047.
Incorporated in 1999, Power Mech Projects Ltd. has established a niche in various segments, including Erection, Testing and Commissioning of main plant and Balance of Plant, Operation and Maintenance (O&M), Repairs, Overhauling, Renovation and Modernization of power plants, and related civil works. While the company’s major operations are based in India, it has also extended its operations globally, with a presence in more than ten countries.
